Draft of proposed resolution on Afghanistan, to be introduced at the Jan. 21, 2010 HCDC meeting.
Resolution Adopted by the Hancock County Democratic Party
Whereas, The Hancock County Democratic Party calls for President Obama to reconsider the decision to increase US troop levels in Afghanistan at a time when Al Qaida’s presence is diminishing in that nation; and
Whereas, the US military intervention in Afghanistan represents a trillion dollar drain on the American economy at a time when recession and unemployment have devastated the American economy and diminished America’s ability to provide elementary economic security for its own citizens; and
Whereas, America military involvement in Afghanistan has served to bolster the Taliban’s resolve to regain power against the demonstrably corrupt regime of President Hamid Karzai; and
Whereas, the casualty rate of American servicemen and women is tragically increasing and, lamentably, an exit strategy has yet to be described, let alone defined;
Therefore be it resolved, that the Hancock County Democratic Committee calls upon the Obama Administration to set an unambiguous timetable for withdrawing all US troops; and work with the United Nations to ensure a peaceful resolution of the Afghan civil war; and divert a portion of military resources currently allocated to war in Afghanistan to securing the borders of neighboring and nuclear-armed Pakistan; and Be it further Resolved, that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Maine Democratic Party, and the Maine Congressional Delegation as well as to President Obama.
