March 12, 2007

At the Ruth Moss Night gala on March 10, 2007, HCDC honored volunteers Jean Devereux and Margaret Knutson with the 2007 Democracy Award.

Hancock County Democrats Honor Volunteers

Sorrento resident Ruth Moss, long time Democratic activist, is a legend in her own time. Named in recognition of her tireless efforts on behalf of the Party, the Ruth Moss Society (RMS) is an active part of the Hancock County Democratic Party. Last Saturday night, members of the RMS and guests gathered to honor two extraordinary volunteers who had gone above and beyond in the Ruth Moss tradition.

Governor John Baldacci and US Congressman Mike Michaud joined Sen. Dennis Damon and Representatives Ben Pratt, Rob Eaton, and Ted Koffman to congratulate this year's award winners: Jean Devereux of Penobscot, and Margaret Knutson of Brooklin.

Last Saturday night's gala event at the Lucerne Inn featured live jazz, good food and a packed house of laughing, energetic Democrats.
"This is just wonderful," remarked one partygoer. "This is why I'm a Democrat. Look around, this room is full of people who gave up their own time and worked hard to make changes. It's great to have an evening to celebrate that."

Speeches were kept remarkably brief as everyone moved about the room chatting, but special note was taken of the accomplishments of Devereux and Knutson.

"Jean was the face of campaign '06", said Dexter Bellows, Vice-Chair. "Anytime anyone called, or came into headquarters, Jean was there to answer their questions and get them the information they needed—and she did it with a smile."

While Devereux was honored for her role front and center as the public greeter, Margaret Knutson was recognized for her work behind the scenes.

"Margaret put in a tremendous amount of work in developing and maintaining our database," remarked Bellows. "Her efforts enabled us to carry out a full range of campaign activities."

Both women were presented with corsages as well as framed, autographed photos of Ruth Moss herself with Governor Baldacci. Their names have been added to a plaque which will hang at the party headquarters in downtown Ellsworth, and they "share custody" of the Democracy Award—a brass donkey statue mounted on Hancock County granite.

Heather Martin-Zboray of Surry, Coordinator for the Hancock County Democrats since 2004, also received recognition for her outstanding service.
