A report on the 2006 Great Democracy Auction, Aug. 19, 2006.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUCTION BRINGS OUT DEMS AND BIDDERS
The rain held off, and people came in droves to the third annual Great Democracy Auction held this past Saturday at the Monteux School in Hancock. The annual fundraiser for the Hancock County Democratic Committee was a social and political event as well. Even Republican District Attorney Mike Povich was seen working the crowd.
Highlights of the evenings included State Senator Dennis Damon in his dual roles as head cook and auctioneer. County Democratic Chair John Knutson said, “He runs an auction with great style. The crowd is terrific and we certainly appreciate the outpouring of support.”
“This is a great, uniquely Maine gathering that brings people together for food, fun and purpose. A lot of people got a Down East lobster dinner, some got bargains and maybe a couple overbid,” said Damon. “The important thing is that people are involved, they care and they had a good time.”
Governor Baldacci and Congressman Mike Michaud were the featured speakers. Congressman Michaud was applauded for calling for a change in the country’s direction by electing a Democratic Congress this fall. Governor Baldacci spoke about Maine’s community values, how the state has dealt with federal budget cutbacks, and the importance of working together to secure Maine’s future. He also spoke admiringly of Hancock County. “People here understand democracy, how important community is, and the value of Maine’s future. Together, we can and will continue moving forward.”
