Maine's Superdelegates

Many Maine Democrats are concerned about the impact superdelegates will have in the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination process.

We asked Will Rice, our Labor Chair and political history buff, for a short history of the superdelegate system. Read his wry description here.

At the February 21, 2008 HCDC meeting, members passed the following resolution:
"We call on Maine's superdelegates to cast their votes such that the delegation’s combined votes fairly reflect the majority and minority votes recorded at the Maine Democratic caucuses."

UPDATE 3/5/08: Sen. George Mitchell and former DNC chair Ken Curtis, formerly listed as Maine superdelegates, have been reassigned to the states where they currently reside (NY and FL respectively).

Here are the 8 Maine superdelegates, with announced pledges noted:

*MDP Chair John announced before the caucus that he would support the candidate who won the majority of the vote in Maine. Said Knutson, "I see this as a way to further empower Democrats across the state of Maine and make the results of our caucus more influential. It is clear that this Presidential campaign will come down to a race for delegates, and I believe that by pledging to support the winner of Maine's caucuses, I will help to increase Maine's importance in the nomination process."
