A Tribute to Alvin Moss Our good friend Alvin Moss died on February 23, 2007, in Morgantown, West Virginia. His wife, Ruth, and their children were by his side as he died peacefully, following a long bout with cancer.
Alvin’s feisty, authoritative character, filled with political lore and many other subjects, was almost but never completely overshadowed by his remarkable spouse. While Ruth rallied the troops and organized Democrats far and wide, Alvin was always her strong advocate and often her data center.
A Lieutenant Colonel in the Army in World War II, Alvin later joined Ruth in vigorous activity in politics and civil liberties in Philadelphia and Maine. They both worked on the decennial U.S. Census in Pennsylvania and Maine. He was a working member of the Pennsylvania State Board of the League of Women Voters and later in Maine was the sole male head of a LWV chapter. He was on the national board of Common Cause, for which both he and Ruth were active members from its founding by John Gardner in 1970.
Alvin would have been 84 years old on March 9. In the past few years, the Mosses lived in Maui, Hawaii, during the winters and then returned to their longtime home in Sorrento. Ruth has gone to Seattle to stay with her daughters for a while and plans to return to Maine in mid-May. Her address in Seattle is 1520 Second Ave.W, Seattle WA 98119. Her phone number is 206 284-7138.
Alvin Moss’s family requests that memorial contributions honoring Alvin be addressed to the Ruth Moss Society of the Hancock County Democratic Committee, Box 1414, Ellsworth ME 04605.
