Overflow Crowd Celebrates Democratic Open House

Congressman Mike Michaud and Governor John Baldacci were in Ellsworth on June 24th, along with US Senate Candidate Jean Hay Bright, local elected officials and candidates for office. They were part of the reason for the overflow crowd outside the doors of the newly renovated
Democratic Headquarters in downtown Ellsworth.

"It's been a steady stream of people all day," said aHncock County Democratic Committee chair John Knutson. "It's great to see so many of our friends and supporters here, and there are a lot
of new faces too! People are encouraged to see a permanent location for the Democratic Party in this county."

In addition to addressing many of the issues facing our state and nation, the candidates had a chance to meet and shake hands with the volunteers, many of whom had worked tirelessly to get the new space ready for this campaign season. "We don't have deep pockets, " admits Vice Chair, Dexter Bellows, "but we do have dedicated volunteers!"

Volunteers built the walls, put down donated eco-carpeting (made in part from recycled materials) and painted. They also made the food, brought the music, and made the decorations - but when the Hancock County Democrats decided to establish a year-round headquarters in
downtown Ellsworth, it was about more than just a meeting place.

"We are at a critical point in our nation's history," said John Knutson. "The Bush Administration is continuing to make decisions which are simply the wrong direction for our country. We all need to roll up our sleeves, as citizens, and work to restore our democracy.

Congressman Michaud congratulated the Governor on his strides towards health care for all, protection of Maine's workers, proactive support of towns facing mill closures, and his work to protect Mainers harmed by the Medicare Part D perscription drug program. "Where the Federal Government failed," said Michaud, "Governor Baldacci and Maine stepped in."
