Young Dems Bowl for Kids' Sake!

The Young Dems and their supporters raised over $600 for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

When Striking Out is a Good Thing

On Sunday afternoon, March 26, the lanes at Eastwood Bowling Alley in Ellsworth were packed with young party faithful as both Young Democrats and Young Republicans fielded teams in the “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Maine. This was one of many good-natured competitions during the two-day-long event.

“Well, politics aside,” grinned Rob Eaton, Youth Services director for the local YMCA and emcee for the event, “What a fun way to raise funds for a great cause. Big Brothers Big Sisters serves over 500 kids in Eastern Maine. The money raised today will be put to good use, helping our neighbors and future community leaders.”

The playing was uneven and gutter balls abounded, but none of that dampened the spirits of those bowling. “It’s not so much about the score,“ said the mother of one young Dem bowler, “It’s about having fun and reaching out to help the community.”

Altogether,190 teams and about 1000 bowlers participated in the event. Organizers said this year’s totals topped $70,000, which should delight both sides of the aisle, or alley as the case may be. Additional donations are welcome and may be sent to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hancock, & Washington Counties, P.O. Box 1087, Ellsworth ME 04605.
