Three Hancock County kids speak out about the 2004 Election
Our Campaign Headquarters coordinator recently received this letter and wanted to share it with you...
Dear Heather,
Thank-you so much for taking the time to talk with our three home-schooled boys, when we visited you at headquarters about three weeks ago. At that time, you invited the boys to write an op ed piece, with the possibility that you would see if a newspaper would publish it, or at least that you would be able to post it on your website.
The boys have finished their op ed piece, and it has been a wonderful educational experience. Our boys feel that, although they cannot yet vote, their voices are important.
Thanks so much once again.
Laurie Schreiber
The piece follows, as three sections:
My name is Peter Grubb. I am 11, and I disagree with Bush's actions. I am home schooled. Studying current events, we went to both the Hancock County Democratic and Republican HQ.
*Bush has lost America and Iraq many lives.
*Millions of Americans are without health care.
*America is too dependent on Middle East oil.
*Nearly 2 million jobs have been lost
*Bush lowers taxes for rich people when he should raise them
*Bush spent $535,000,000,000 on military personnel, $20,000,000,000 on invading Iraq. It costs $3.9,000,000,000 PER MONTH!
Name: Spenser Simis; age 12; home schooled.
I think that Bush is a very bad president (I gave him a 1.1 out of ten). I do not think that he handled the war very well. Here are my reasons for not liking Bush:
Even though he has spent the most on health and human services, he is spending next to nothing on the national science foundation.
He is spending less than eighty billion on the department of education, while he spends four hundred and fifty billion on the war.
48% of Americans believe that America is less secure because of the war.
He is spending INSANELY little on environmental protection.
The nationšs deficit has risen to four hundred and twenty two billion since Bush has become president, and it was in surplus before.
More U.S. service members have died since Bush declared the war over, than who died in the war.
The war costs $3,900,000 per month, which he could be spending on the environment.
And now Kerry: I do not believe Kerry will do everything that he says he will if he becomes president, but I think that Kerry will be a better president than Bush. (I give him a 7.5 out of ten.)
Kerry:
Kerry has got a better health care plan than Bush does.
He has not done anything stupid.
Mostly, I like Kerry because he is not Bush.
My name is Ezra Schreiber-MacQuaid. I live in Bass Harbor, Maine, and I am 12. I am home schooled and I am learning about the upcoming elections.
In my opinion, Bush is doing a poor and lousy job. I mean, he spent $536,000,000,000 on military personnel and $26,000,000,000 for invading Iraq. He's also spending insanely little on environmental protection, he's not spending much on the Department of Education, and because of him and his "war hunger," over 600 U.S. troops and 100 "coalition" troops have been killed, over 15,000 Iraqi and Afghani troops have been killed, over 11,000 innocent Iraqi and Afghani citizerns have been killed, 53% of Europeans believe the U.S. is a threat to world peace, and 48% believe the U.S. is less secure because of the Iraq war. Also, Bush has spent the most on health and human services and he hasnšt done anything with it!
On the plus side, Kerry says that he will "make this world work for people again" and that he "wants kids to have a bright future and access to education is critical."
BOTTOM LINE - I hope Kerry gets elected.
